MICHAEL ANDREW COONEY, of Fairfield, CT, received his Master of Music degree (M.Mus) and Bachelor of Music degree (B.Mus) in piano performance from the University of Connecticut, as a student of Neal Larrabee. He also studied jazz piano and theory with Ellen Rowe and Dave Santoro. Mr. Cooney has performed as soloist with the University of Connecticut Wind Ensemble, Eastern Connecticut Symphony, Harkness Summer Music Festival and the Meriden Symphony Orchestra. He has participated in master classes with artists such as Steven Osborne, Harold Danko, Dr. Billy Taylor, Awadagin Pratt, and Philip Setzer of the Emerson String Quartet. In addition to performing, Mr. Cooney studied composition with Avo Somer. His piano solo “Ballade, Op. 2” was premiered in 1999 by Aaron Sinicrope. The Faculty Arts Trio of the University of Connecticut premiered his piano trio entitled “Velvet Trio, Op. 5” which was written after a visit to Prague, Czech Republic, in February of 2000. He was awarded a full scholarship to attend the Dartington International Summer School to study composition with Kurt Schwertsik of the Vienna Conservatory. During his residence at the school, he composed a work for cello and piano, “Op. 6” which was premiered by members of the Viennese 20th century Ensemble. He has been the musical director for several productions, to recently include: West Side Story, Oliver, Bat Boy the Musical, Bye Bye Birdie, Lucky Stiff, La Cage aux Folles, Oklahoma!, and The Fantasticks. He is the Music Director at Saint Francis of Assisi Parish in Weston, CT., and teaches piano and theory privately for his company Cooney Studio. Mr. Cooney proudly served as an infantryman in the 1/102nd CT Army National Guard, 29th Infantry Division for 8 years and was honorably discharged in 2001. He earned the Army Achievement, and Army Commendation medals, as well as Soldier of the Year in 1998. Michael is happily married to his wife, Colleen and has since taken on the greatest role of his life as Father to his son Patrick. He will play the rolw again as they are expecting #2 in February! He has found the best things in life being a family guy. |
